MARCH 11, 2021 — I hiked some pretty difficult ups and downs yesterday to get to my destination at Fontana Dam. What was most difficult was climbing over boulder after boulder and not even being sure if I was still on the trail. What a relief it was to get across all of the rocks to see a white Blaze on a tree! Then, it was quite challenging to maneuver under a couple of trees that had fallen across the path. On the first one, I had to take my pack off and push it under before I crawl through myself. The second one was a little higher and I was able to crawl under it with my pack on.
I reached Fontana Dam where Sam was waiting for me with my resupply… Furthermore, she went the extra mile, literally, and took me into a nearby town to do laundry and lunch. I arrived back at the shelter to find that a group had come to provide hot dogs and side dishes to the hikers who were camping here. There were probably about 20 of us. It was a real treat! I slept great and am getting a later start today. I enter the Smoky Mountain National Park today and look forward to the experience.
