(May 27)— The decision is made…I am leaving the trail and going home. It was not hard to decide as I still cannot walk without pain so I certainly cannot hike and carry a backpack. I am so sad about this development but, of course, I am thrilled about seeing my family and friends soon! I have an appointment with my orthopaedic on Tuesday and will do whatever it takes to get better. Then, I plan to return to the trail next year to finish. Ongoing prayers appreciated, my friends.
I have appreciated all of your kind words of support, encouragement, prayers, and expressions of love. As I sit resting (with my knee iced, compressed, and elevated – RICE) waiting to go home on Sunday or Monday, I have had much time to think. I know writing about my adventures will come next. ALL of you have been a part of those adventures as you have encouraged and supported my journey. So, I have a question for anyone who wishes to share. Many have used the words “inspire” or “inspiration” in comments on FB. IF you are comfortable doing so, would you share what that looks like in your life? What are you inspired to do, say, or change in your life? How has any inspiration played out in your mind, heart, and/or life? Feel free to PM me if your answer is sensitive in nature. Thanks again for the many ways y’all have participated in Part I of my AT journey!
THANKS Heidi J. Gloeckner O’Callaghan
Thank you for these wonderful words of advice and encouragement! I truly appreciate it. Thank you to Jim, as well! ❤️
“Jill, this is just a pause in your journey. You will finish it when you are physically able. Your knee needs a little assist right now and you have the right team behind you. Do what you have to do to heal. Jim suggests maybe they’ll make you a brace for when you resume the trail. (He was an orthopaedic surgical PA his first two years then became and ICU PA). You must know how proud I am of you!! Jim wants me to tell you he’s very impressed and proud of you too! You have inspired not only me but countless others as well. Your knee and your health are of paramount importance. Good for you for stopping when you did before the damage became too great, became permanent, ending your dream of completing the trail. May God continue to bless and keep you and He will be with you again as you hit the Trail to resume your journey! ❤ ❤”
